Conquering My Closet

I love my closet. I really do love my closet. I admire the fact that my closet is huge (or at least what I would consider huge), the custom design, and most importantly, that it is full of all of my wonderful clothes, shoes, and accessories. When my husband and I bought our house almost six years ago, I took one look at the walk-in closet and I was sold. So, I left behind my tiny, miniscule closet of the past and jumped head first into my new amazing space without any hesitation.

As luck would have it, I was also newly employed at The Stow Company. I could not wait to design the closet of my dreams and began to fill my space with the great ORG product that I was talking about everyday. In my mind, I had just won the closet lottery. Cha-ching.

Well, here I am six years later and although I now have the closet of my dreams, I have a problem. I am still not 100% sure that this should be considered a PROBLEM but, here it is: my closet is too full. Believing that I would never be able to overfill my new enormous closet, I have spent the last few years "collecting" more and more. Despite my beautiful custom closet, today my shelves and hanging rods are overflowing. I simply have put too much stuff on them.

Conquer My Closet

I want my closet to live up to its potential - to look amazing and be clutter free. I need to get my closet back under control and the only way for that to take place is (gasp)...by getting rid of clothes. This is not going to be an easy task for me. I love my clothes and I have never let go of any item easily.

So, I present this challenge to myself. Starting today, I will take back my closet and give it life again. I may be kicking and screaming at first, but I vow that I will attempt to find the best way to put my closet on a diet. As I work through this process, I promise to share what is working for me, and the fun or hardships of my journey. I welcome any advice that anyone has to offer on the best ways to regain control of my closet. My "Conquer My Closet" project has officially begun. Wish me luck!

If you haven't worn it in a year, it should go. All my clothes are taken to 2nd hand store, and anything they won't accept goes to Goodwill. Save the "really" cool clothes for my children (just a little).

Wow, it looks exactly as a remember seeing it. LOL. It can be difficult to purge, I know that all too well so my rule of thumb has been that if I have not worn it in a year that it is not a necessity. I have always tried to do giveaways that made me feel good. For example giving to friends and family (hint, hint). I have also donated to organizations that would give the items directly to those in need such as Women In Transition.

My biggest piece of advice is to go slowly. If you gradually purge it is not as traumatic as doing a huge purge at once.

Once you do purge try to follow the one in, one out rule. Which means...if you buy something new then there is probably something that can go.

Good Luck!

I purge often (my closet is a dwarf compared to yours). I find that the items I suffer over most (can't bear to get rid of but don't ever seem to select off the hanger), I forget all about them when I finally take the plunge, hold my breath and quickly stuff it into a goodwill bag and drop it off before I can change my mind. Kinda like losing a tooth. Yank and your done.

Lisa you are so bold! Thanks for sharing--you are hard core to just put it all out there and do it. You have a good eye and will make great decisions.

Lisa, I'm so impressed that with a closet with that many clothes it already looks so organized! You may inspire me to give mine a make over too. And by the way, if you ever decide to have a garage sale with any of your awesome clothes, let me know!!

That closet is as big as our master bedroom. I think you should hang a sign in the front yard and open a clothing store.

I just purged my closet last week. Got rid of two bags of clothes. Not too much, but enough to justify me buying more. :) Or perhaps just taking what you get rid of...keep me posted on the rejects, I bet they will look great in my closet!
