Conquering My Closet: 73 Skirts and 1 Dutch Costume

The process of taking inventory of my wardrobe was quite an eye opening experience. By actually quantifying the number of items in my closet, I have finally proven to myself that I simply have too much stuff. As much as I adore all of the clothing and accessories that currently fill my closet, I now fully and whole-heartedly realize that I must trim the excess and keep only what I really need.

In order of my favorite things, here's my closet inventory list:

Conquering My Closet

  • 14 pairs of jeans
  • 73 skirts
  • 69 pairs of shoes = flip flops (6), boots (13), slippers (6), sandals (21), all other unclassified shoes (23)
  • 37 scarves
  • 35 hand bags and purses
  • 42 dresses
  • 51 tee shirts
  • 38 tank tops
  • 39 long sleeved shirts
  • 15 sweatshirts
  • 22 sweaters
  • 14 bathing suits
  • 137 blouses (work clothes)
  • 21 belts
  • 5 beach hats
  • 6 baseball caps
  • 1 cowboy hat
  • 3 bridesmaid dresses, plus the matching shoes
  • 1 Dutch dance costume

The next crucial step in the clearing-my-closet process is to determine the best ways to eliminate the excess items. Since I started writing for this blog, someone recommended that I should do away with anything that I have not worn in over two years. Where should I start? I'm curious about what recommendations you may have. For now, I suppose that I will start with the "Two Year Rule," only because the "One Year Rule" seems way too harsh!

Okay, so your list is very impressive. However, we were wondering about your coats. Do you have a separate closet for those? :)

Sure do! That might just have to be my next project after I tackle my closet... :)

I would also add to the list anything that has holes, stains, buttons missing.. you know, things you were keeping around that you were going to repair months ago, but never got around. Either sit down and repair them immediately or toss them. And anything that doesn't fit right. Since you have so much that does fit you don't have to keep around anything that doesn't. Just a thought. :-)
