Kid's Closet Remodel: Part I

I must admit that I knew very little about custom closets before coming to work for The Stow Company. However, I am an experienced home improver and organizer. My husband and I have 13 years under our belts renovating, remodeling and maintaining three different fixer-uppers. I've also balanced a professional career and ongoing home improvement projects while keeping our hectic household with two energetic, elementary-aged kids and a rambunctious retriever organized. When I began at The Stow Company, I was thrilled to learn everything there is to know about designing and organizing custom closets, pantries, garages and other areas of the home.

Have you heard the term experiential learning? We've certainly learned from our remodeling experiences, first living in a 100-year-old farm house which was in constant need of repair, then moving into our large two-story, handyman-built home which housed just the two of us, and finally into our current one-story fixer-upper with half the footprint and double the amount of people living in it. Built in the 1970's, our bedrooms are small and the closets are minuscule, to say the least.

Our minuscule closets need help, and having access to an incredible selection of storage products is like a dream come true. Now that I have a better understanding of closet systems, I'm going to continue advancing my experiential learning by overhauling my kids' closets. Ladies first! Here's Hannah's horrific closet.

Kid's ClosetLike I said before, we were not closet experts, and before knowing any better, we installed this cheap wire closet system in Hannah's bedroom. I have now hit a breaking point. I'm fed up with things falling through and off the shelves. We cannot move the shelves and rods, which is a necessity when it comes time to change out Hannah's clothes for the different seasons and rearrange her closet. Plus, we have an overwhelming need for better book and toy storage and a way to organize all of her jewelry and dress-up accessories. She needs storage baskets, drawers, racks, and the ability to reach her clothes.

Look for my next post where we replace the wire closet system with a beautiful Easy Track custom closet organizer. Hannah can't wait! She also hopes that we'll paint her bedroom pink.
